Nagorno-Karabakh agreement close
Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian has said that Armenia and Azerbaijan are making progress towards an agreement over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Talks were held with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov ahead of a summit in Kazan on the 25th June. Any eventual agreement would have to be approved by the region’s largely Armenian population.
Serbia halts talks with Kosovo
Serbia had delayed a fifth round of its ongoing talks with Kosovo, suggesting it needs more time to consider its current position, although Edita Tahiri, who is leading the Kosovan negotiation team, believes they are stalling on agreements over key issues like energy and telecommunications.
Another Muslim death in Dagestan
Ashurlav Kurbanov, an moderate Muslim in the Russian region of Dagestan, has been killed by an unknown assassin, just days after the death of imam Maksud Sadikov, who had sought non-violence, as well as a Russian translation of the Quran.. The murders have been blamed on Islamist extremists, with increasing concerns for the safety of moderates in the region.
